JuniorYear Semester 2: PrePro!!!

It was a great Christmas break! I guess I lied about posting more work. Over the break I worked on many projects and fixing older projects for the demo-reel/portfolio and modeled stuff for this semester's projects. I felt that break was over too fast. But on the brightside, this semester I'm part of a 3 man team for Preproduction for Senior Thesis!

So far its been a blast! I remembered my boss at the studio where I interned this past summer was really into group projects. Its one thing making your own thesis, but when you add more people, it really teaches you about communication, direction, optimization, management, teamwork, plussing work, etc.

I'm hopeful for a fun exciting semester and maybe one day I'll post more work. It gets harder b/c all the work we are doing now is for our senior film... and why spoil the film by posting it?

Thoughts on Junior Year...

As a freshman, you hear incredible stories from upperclassmen about how hard the Computer Animation Curriculum is. People say you'll have no life and its hard work. Well its actually a bit worse than it sounds. The pressure is on for the rest of the semester. People are getting around 2-3 hours of sleep consecutively during this time of the month. There isn't enough hours in the day to get everything done to your personal best level. I guess its necessary to experience the industry " crunch time" but... it really hurts as an artist to have to create mediocre work just to get those points to pass the curriculum. I guess one has to be a little more than human to tough it out in the industry. There are amazing people that do it...but for the average human its hard to adapt to. I've heard from upperclassmen that during second semester PrePro for thesis, we will suffer much psychological damage. From observing my senior friends last year, I don't doubt it at all.

This semester has been another great experience. Even though we juniors don't have free time to do much extra curricular activities, it really makes us appreciate what little free time we do have. Every small special moment becomes even more special. People are already talking about group thesis's, specialization and push-pull.

I even hear about all the psychological damage we'll experience for pre-pro for thesis. I'm already ready for this year to be over. My biggest goal right now would be to be acceptable enough to do an internship for lighting/texturing/compositing. One can dream cant they???

My teacher just showed us the calender for our push-pull animation assignment where we create an animation from initial sketch to modeling, rigging, animation, and rendering. We just turned in our "waiting animation" and now we have to model a head in a couple of days along with all the other homework we have. Haha...fun times.

Time just flew by this summer for me. I've been doing a lot of thinking. And... not a lot of life drawing,heh. Junior year is coming up ...which also includes prepro, thinking about specialization (if i ever want to work at a big studio), and more work in general. I've also given myself the new goal of aiming for big studios next summer. Last semester I tried my hardest to be a generalist and to get a generalist internship so i could try many things. Through it i found many answers to my questions.

I took a big hiatus from from intense life sketching and focused more on computer things...so this is me trying to get back into the groove.

Sophomore is Year Over!

Ahh... its 1 week into summer and I've been procrastinating from updating this blog. It was a pretty tiring and painful semester for many. I'm glad its over for now. I'd say definitely got my money's worth this year. I can't say I was 100% happy with how the curriculum was conducted. I think my part of my successes this semester were because of the teachings of upperclassmen and peers.

Special thanks to Sam Tilson, Scott Mcwhinnie, Francesco Girodini, Rob Showalter, Uri Lotan, and Matt Sullivan for your generous help, crit and tutorials. You guys rock!

Ringling Year2 Semester 1 done

Here are some of my final projects. The last assignment in CA1 was to design a simple biped character with no arms and do a series of excercises. I made a ricefarmer guy who pretends he's a ninja. Special thanks to Scott Mcwhinnie and John Gulledge for animation crits and painting weights advice. I got A-'s on the animation part of the grades so thats pretty sweet. It also seems that the Sorenson codec from Adobe Premiere makes all of my CA videos have a green tint...

The final animatic we had to do was the "thief". Someone wants a bite of your food. And finally are some more sketches.

I've been trying to think more about shapes and simplifying into the idea of straights against curves in my sketching... I'll update with more work over the Christmas holidays!

Here is my Weaving Contest Animatic and my Pantomime. For concept, we were given a Scene from a greek myth called "The Weaving Contest". We had to design the characters, storyboard, and create a 30 second animatic. For Traditional Animation we had to animate a character showing emotions through primarily body language.

Here are some CA and TA projects I've been working on. In ca we just finished the ball bounce assignment. I've gotten pretty interested in lighting.Here is my normal quadraped walk. In concept we're still on our 4th pass of the animatic assignment so stay tuned. Next up in CA and TA are Primitive theater and Pantomime.

I've been trying out brushpen for my gestures. Its pretty punishing because every line you put down clearly shows in the final image. But I think its good for practicing line economy. Anyways I just keep this quote in mind... "Draw with pen, do not be afraid of failure"- Walt Stanchfield.

Sophomore year started off with a fun orientation week, going to the beach, and meeting old friends and making new ones. I love my new CA and Concept classes so far! Most Sophomore CA projects are long term and time consuming so updates won't be as constant...but they'll come!

Summer Sketches

Summer is almost over! This summer has been a busy one! In the beginning of summer, I was really excited to be able to finally have time to work on finished pieces for the portfolio. To my surprise, it didn't quite happen exactly as I expected. I made a list of goals and eventually knocked out maybe a third of what I wanted to get done. While working at my job, i was able to finish a couple of summer classes and get my license! Also, i did a bit of reading,sketching,studying and maya learning.

Instead of trying to tackle a lot of color or value I decided to get better at drawing form,pushing my sillhouette/poses, inventing anatomy from my head, thinking about movement, caricature, and try to figure out what makes a good character design.Instead of mindlessly drawing, I tried to think about what i wanted to achieve before I started to draw. My major inspirations this summer came from Walt Stanchfield, Glenn Villpu, Tom Bancroft, and character design blog.

Lastly I've been trying to learn a bit of Maya. There are tons of tools and buttons! I'm super excited for CA next semester and I can't wait to be around motivated people. Going to my local university was a great experience and a big eye opener. There are many people that work just as hard in their major and many people who just try to slide by or are just naive. I've learned better study habits through experiencing my psychology class.My psychology class was more challenging that any liberal arts I've taken at Ringling but it helped me realize many concepts that are important to art, education, and life.

Some of my goals for next semester is to do the best I can in my major classes, participate in more clubs,contests, and work on improving my line quality, value and color. I hope everyone updates their blogs with their summer work and I'll see all my buddies in a few days!

Ringling Last Day: Freshman year

Well Ringling freshman year is over. Second semester definitely picked up especially since I overloaded. I even worked till the last day for traditional animation. Here are my final projects in Communication design, Observational Color,Animation, and Figure. For my final com design project I designed Chinese zodiac animals. Tried to practice my lighting and color. Then in color class we did 1 hour paintings from life. I also have my last 2 walk cycles from animation and 10 pages from my final figure figure portfolio.

Ringling Spring 01 Week 10

Last week I had the most amazing spring break. To start it off, I saw Alice in wonderland,rode with 13 people in a truck,went to an arcade,ate chinese food,went to the beach a couple of times, sketch crawled downtown with friends, volunteered at habitat for humanity,got to be on television,and enjoyed the hot tub at someone's apartment. To end the week, Stevie took a group of us out to eat Korean food! I definitely had fun in Florida. This past week has been pretty busy and yesterday was my birthday! Too bad I only got 2 hours of sleep and had classes from 8 am to 6 pm.

I have my TA character design, and an Alice in Wonderland themed digital gray-scale painting. I might add color to the Alice in wonderland painting later in the future.

So here is Thibodeaux (ti-buh-doe) the lizard. He is based off of the goofy archtype and he is from a Cajun Louisianian background. He is friendly, usually cheerful, but a bit slow sometimes when it comes to thinking.I must say, designing my lizard character was really challenging for me. Not only did it have to be simple, it had to be designed to where it could have good poses,silhouettes,look like a lizard, simple and be animatable so i could draw it 200 times. Special thanks to my traditional animation teacher, Gordon, Adam and Stevie for giving me a lot of character designing tips.

Animation has been quite challenging but enjoyable at the same time. To a regular person working for 20 hours to produce a 3 second clip sounds insane, but to an animator it is fun.

Its been a while. Here are some paintings from my color class and an animation from my Communication design class.

In color class we don't focus on artsy strokes, we put down color swatches and treat the painting like a drawing. We try to communicate a color as clear as possible. It was very challenging. Communication design on the other hand is a pretty loose/concept based class. We were assigned an installation piece about nature. Tyler, Christine and I teamed up to create an animation about a plant growing out of the earth. I animated the tree, tyler shaded/rendered the animation, and christine animated the insect.

Balls and Sacks

Here are my balls and sack. They are not perfect but please enjoy.
First is my flour sack jump 2 exercise. It involves acting as well as jumping. Second is a composite of all my ball bounces (perspective collision, heavy tail, and light hard). Though they appear to be simple animations they were challenging to animate. For some reason when i composited all of my ball bounces it gave me a black border.

Has been an amazing experience! I've enjoyed many awesome new experiences like creating animation,exploring more in character designing,and traditional painting. I've had the opportunity to attend cool events like volunteering at national portfolio day and help organize an art and music festival. Also I'm fortunately able to continue practicing figure drawing. My figure class has been really amazing and its focus is dynamic gestures that are proportionally correct! Art update coming soon!

For our 3d final, we had to incorporate all the elements and principles of design into a floating intention. My partner Anguel and I collaborated with another team to perform a skit where we invade Troy. We created a Horse Boat named Massive Black. Massive Black fared well on land, but, in the ocean... not really. All in all, we had a blast and made memories and friendships. We learned much about teamwork,communication, time management power tools,and balancing objects. We spent 8 hours editing the video...so enjoy!

Every drawing teacher had their own form of a Final Exam. My Drawing teacher had us do a visual Narrative. We had to incorporate what we learned in class (ex: composition, contour, perspective, negative space, value).I got some assistance and tips on how to create interesting characters and what programs to use to create an animatic from many awesome upperclassman CA's. In the end, I made an A+

During the holidays, I hope to learn more about creating characters and reading the animators survival kit. I cant wait for Traditional animation next semester!

It's been pretty busy these past few weeks with finals. Unfortunately my camera broke so I am at an inconvenience with uploading traditional art. My most recent drawings/figure drawing are in my teacher's possession and I won't get them back till next semester. Here is a 2pt. perspective imaginary city scape with 3 robotic evil kickboxing monkeys trying to invade a city through the power of forest-o-vision, a couple of long poses, some 1-2 min gestures,and some shaded fruit.

Toy Project: The Magical Tree Man

Thank goodness this week is over! I finally recovered enough sleep from pulling 2 all nighters. This is my toy project for 3d design. We had a month to create the toy and the packaging. I probably spent over 100+ hours on it. The concept is a fantasy scene taking place in an apple orchard with a tree-man interacting with a forest nymph.

I chose to do a collectable figurine focusing on anatomy, contrast, and detail. My friend suggested that a great way to learn anatomy was through the sense of touch so I tailored the design of the toy to suit my pursuit of understanding of upperbody musculature. Also I learned a lot of sculpting techniques and photoshop techniques from making the box as well. I had a lot of fun doing this proect. Also I believe its good preparation for us CAs because we covered the basics of preproduction all the way to post production.

Whew its saturday and finally have the time to update the blog again. These past 3 weeks have been really busy because of the toy project assignment for 3d design. I have a ton of figure work but I'm not going to spam. I'll just post a few things. Also, I realize I've been doing to much representational work and I need to exxaggerate movement more. Whoohoo this is my mass project! It was an assignment that was suppossed to depict mass. The concept is a bulky man on top of an octopus. I could have done better with the anatomy on the man and the octopus but I am satisfied with the final result. My favorite part was painting it.

Ringling Week 4 is over!

I can't believe a month has passed at Ringling! I came to the school wondering what it would be like being surrounded by an artistic community. I had never visited the campus before coming here. As I arrived on campus after a two-day road trip, I was greeted by some friendly orientation leaders. The campus was definitely more colorful and well landscaped than I had pictured. My favorite part about Ringling,though, are the students. The artists here range from every possible skill level. Everyone here is friendly and helps each other out. If there are assholes, I've yet to meet one.

Well I can say I've learned or relearned stuff like building armatures,the human skeleton,contour lines,reflected light,and negative spaces. Also I'm thankful for more opportunities to draw from life.

I'm still trying my best to update weekly (i missed by a day lol)Here is a sample of sketchbook pages and live anatomy studies from this week. Everything posted was done 20 min or under.

Whew! This summer's been passing by. Now I'm starting to wish summer was longer. There's so much information on the figure and 2 months is not nearly enough time to learn it all. So my summer's been alright. I've been working, running, studying anatomy/figure/,drawing, and getting ready for college. It was not the easiest thing to do I admit but by doing it I gained a better understanding of Photoshop and color theory. Also I learned the importance of building a solid base sketch.

I'm still wait-listed for Ringling.I am still kicking and striving to compensate for that by learning,drawing,and digitally painting as much as I can. I even sent another 20 pieces to Ringling for portfolio reevaluation. I have an AP art show coming up and pics will be coming shortly after that.

This is a digital painting I made for my dad's b-day. I used Opencanvas 1.1 And yes, he has a high forehead lol. Spent about 2-3 hours. I'm still learning the digital medium.

My SCAD scholarship came in the mail today. Well, I only got 8k/year. I think I did good on my portfolio but i could have done better. It was a great learning experience and I couldn't have done it without the advice from the superb community at conceptart.org.

Now I just have to wait for Ringling College of Art and Design.

I can finally take a breath. I got an acceptance letter from Laguna College of Art and Design and a 6k/year merit scholarship. Now I have to wait 3 weeks for SCAD and Ringling. Now I have to work on my AP design portfolio. I am way behind on pieces so I will still be working nonstop.

I went sketching at the zoo...didnt turn out too well since I was sick and it was 30 degrees outside. Yeh...so I took a picture instead. Also, it actually snowed in Louisiana. We havent had snow in years.
